Obituary of Herbert L. Atwell

Herbert L. "Herb" Atwell Vernon-Herbert L. "Herb" Atwell, age 61, of Lampman Road and a lifelong resident of Vernon passed away Friday evening, October 3, 2014 in the Siegenthaler Center with his family and friends at his side. He was born on December 30, 1952, one of three sons of the late Kenneth and Charlotte (Rathbun) Atwell and was a 1971 V.V.S. High School graduate. Herb retired at age of fifty from Dairylea & Hood with over thirty-two years of service. Herb was an avid outdoorsman, loved, hunting, four wheeling and snowmobiling at the family camp in High Market. In his youth Herb loved Boy Scouts, the outdoors and camping at Camp Kinsley In 2003 Herb started doing the Ride for Missing Children in Utica. This was a yearly ride of approximately one hundred miles to raise awareness for the plight of missing children around the country. Herb did this for ten years and developed great friendships with fellow riders to this day. Herb's other passion was umpiring baseball every summer for a number years for local high schools, little leagues and summer leagues, was an avid NY Yankees fan and SU Basketball fan. Herb leaves behind, two older brothers and two sisters-in-law, Tom and Barbara Atwell of Rome and Charles and Barbara Atwell of St. Charles, IL, five beautiful nieces and nephews, Stephen, Daniel (Kristy), Amy, Kate and Josh, five great nieces and great nephews, Lily, Jake, Evelyn, Brycen and Elliott, Aunt Louise and a number of cousins. Herb loved his whole family and was loved and will be missed dearly. The family extends a special thanks to Doctors, Grenier,Desai, Lawrence, Coyle and his staff at Hematology and Oncology in Oneida and Hospice staff for being so caring and wonderful to Herb. Special thanks to Carol, Julie, Beckie and Skip for being there throughout Herb's illness and also to Herb's entire bicycle riding friends for all their support and kindness. Also thank you to Fran Broski for being such a good friend throughout the years. Family and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 23 Front Street, Vernon. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Vernon United Methodist Church E. Seneca Street, Vernon, with Rev. Frank Loan officiating. Burial will be private and at the families convenience.
