Obituary of Marie Davis Smith

Marie Alice Waters Davis Smith, born June 18, 1935, went to her heavenly home on September 8, 2025 at the Oneida Extended Care Facility surrounded by her four daughters. Daughter of Roland and Audra Waters she was the youngest of eight children and was a 1953 graduate of Stockbridge Valley Central School. She married Kenneth W. Davis of Verona on July 5, 1953 at the Verona Seventh Day Baptist Church. Together they raised four daughters and hosted an AFS student from Peru for the school year in 1972. Marie worked at the Verona Motel, Mila Fabrics, Oneida County Summer Children's Food program and provided in-home care to relatives and friends. She was an active member and deaconess of the Verona Seventh Day Baptist Church serving on numerous committees and positions. They enjoyed being members of the local square dance clubs. They were active in the Verona community. After Kenneth's untimely death on August 2, 1983 she married Rev. Quintin "Gene" Smith of Adams Center, NY on October 15, 1988. During this time, they lived in Adams Center; Alabama; Verona and Sherrill and wintered in Florida numerous years. Gene passed March 10, 2014. They enjoyed living at Noyes Manor during their later years in Sherrill and also enjoyed square dancing. Marie will be remembered fondly as a loving mom, hard worker, strong-willed and faithful to her family, church and friends. Surviving are her four daughters: Cynthia (Stephen) Freihofer, Donna (Bill) Wiley, Janet Butler, Nancy (Steve) Tucker. Also her Peruvian "daughter", Hilda Casanova de Vigil (Antonio). Her step-children: Gene Jr. (Diane) Smith, Todd (Wanda) Smith, Grant (Kerri) Smith, Mary Jo Edmondson, Angela (Paul) Lamont and Debi (Tony) Botkin. A beloved sister, Dorothy Warner and sister-in-law, Della Fern Davis. She was a loving grandmother to eleven grandchildren: Dan (Cynthia), Taryn (Brian), Jennifer (Greg), Jill (Shaun), Ben (Tania), Crystal (Tristan), Carol (Andrew), Valerie, Matthew (Danielle), Randy, Jackson (Katelyn); twenty-three great grandchildren and a great-great granddaughter due in October. Also many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters: Rodney, Maxa, Myron, Alecia, Donald, Glen and a cherished son-in-law Rev. Kevin Butler. Special thanks from the family to all the nurses and staff of the 5th floor at Oneida Extended Care and especially Brenda Rose, NP. Calling hours will be Sunday, September 14 at 2-4 pm at Malecki Funeral Home in Sherrill, NY. The funeral will be held on Monday, September 15 at 10:30 am at the Verona Seventh Day Baptist Church, 6775 Blackmans Corner Rd., Verona, NY with a graveside service following.
