John Francis Belton Senior, 88, of Vernon New York, passed away on 1 November 2024, 19 days shy of his 89th birthday.

Born 20 November 1935 in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, predeceased by his parents James T. Belton and Eugenie L. Belton. One of six children, John grew up in the greater Pittsburgh area and attended North Catholic High School and Duquesne University. In 1955 he joined the USAF/ Pennsylvania Air National Guard, commissioned as an officer and flew as a fighter pilot. During this time John was also employed as a utilities analyst for the US Steel Edgar Thompson works in Pittsburgh. John left military service in the rank of Captain. He was hired by Mohawk Airlines in Utica NY in 1962 where he flew as an airline pilot for 33 years retiring in 1995 as a Boeing 767 Captain for USAir.

In 1960 John married his true love, Johanna M. Politylo of Alison Park PA. John is survived by Johanna and their seven children, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Daughter, Patricia J. Collmer (spouse Sean, sons Bryan and Jack). Daughter, Linda M. Belton, (spouse Mike, daughter Sarah). Son, John F. Belton Jr. (spouse Andrea, daughter Alexandria). Daughter, Laurie A. Whittin (spouse Robert, daughter Carley Ditro, Sp Jason, son Robbie). Son, James T. Belton (spouse Jacqueline, sons James, Todd and Joseph). Son, Michael W. Belton (spouse Elizabeth) and son, Robert A. Belton. Great grand children Alysia and Blaise Siler and Sivi, Mora and Adrey Ditro.

A husband, father, grandfather, captain, coach, mentor, leader and selfless inspiration to his family, community and nation, John F. Belton Sr. Leaves a legacy of people he influenced in the most positive ways. In his 89 years, he touched countless people around the world and will be remembered as pillar of his community. His strength, warmth and generosity with his time, talent and treasure are woven into the Vernon community. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Calling hours will be on Friday, November 22, 2024 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home, 23 Front Street, Vernon NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 4352 Peterboro Street, Vernon NY.
