Mark V. Wood Jr.

Son of  Eleanor and Mark V. Wood Sr.

Born: May 31, 1949
Passed: December 25, 2024

The greatest son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Mark Wood Jr., moved on to heaven Christmas morning, 2024—

Mark is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 55 years, Kathy; his devoted children, Tracy (Todd Merrell) and Matt (Kirsten Wood); and seven grandchildren—Ashley, Eric, Evan, Allison, Will, Cloey and Sophie—who looked up to him as a hero, idol and guide. He also served as a mentor to over 25 nieces and nephews, who cherished his wisdom, one-liners, and unwavering support. Mark is also survived by his best friends, brothers and sisters Linda Wood (Webster, NY), Bob and Frances Wood (Sauquoit, NY), Scott and Lisa Wood (Boulder, Co), Jeff Wood (Siesta Key, Fl), Brian Wood (Firestone, Co), Mike and Paula Wood (Golden, Co), and Sharyn and John Mahoney (Nashville, Tn).

Born and raised in Oneida, Mark knew the value of roots and community. He began his journey serving his country with great pride and is a proud Marine Combat Veteran. Recognized many times for his courage and decisiveness, he was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal Combat V, Purple Heart, and other honors that reflected his remarkable service. Mark’s military career was defined by bravery, but he carried humility into all aspects of his life.

After the Marines, Mark began a career with New York Telephone, where his hard work and dedication enabled him to retire at the age of 45. Never one to rest on his laurels, Mark then pursued a long and meaningful career in law enforcement, serving the departments of Madison County, Hamilton, and Cazenovia. Through these roles, he touched countless lives and demonstrated his commitment to the safety and well-being of his community.

Mark was treasured for his friendship, devotion to his family, and willingness to make time for others. Whether he was teaching a fishing or hunting lesson, offering a helping hand, or simply being present, Mark made a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Always a teacher, Mark believed that life’s lessons were best learned by living fully and making time for others. If you were fortunate enough to spend time with him, you undoubtedly walked away with both a smile and newfound insight. A man of deep integrity, Mark lived simply, loved deeply, and left behind a legacy of action and care.

Mark started and ended his life in Oneida, a testament to his belief in knowing and appreciating a good thing when he saw it. If you believed Mark liked your dog more than you, you were right. Mark was at peace deep in the woods or floating far from shore. Though he has moved on, his lessons, his laughter, and his love remain eternal.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wanderers’ Rest Humane Association or Tunnels to Towers. It was Mark’s wish to continue supporting causes close to his heart.
