I am very sorry to hear of Barney's passing. I pray he rests peacefully. He was a very nice man and a great memory of my childhood growing up on Marble Road. All of the Lanz's are a wonderful family. Barney drove his loader down the hill, plowing all the way, after the blizzard of '66, and plowed us out. I also remember him coming down with some dirt and a dozer when we first moved in around 1960. I didn't go to church often, but when I did, he was always there. He was always happy and smiling. He was a great example of loyalty and he was a gentleman. I'm sure he will be missed.

Dear Grandpa (in-law) Barney,
Although no words can capture how much you are missed, the memories we have all shared with you throughout the years, will be in our hearts and part of who we are, forever. I am thankful and honored to have met you in 2010 and will never forget being introduced by you to my first (of quite a few) Hee Haw episodes, as I started my memories with the family.
As Amber beautifully quoted Pat and Lori of "hitting the jackpot with Father in Laws" with you, I can attest to you being the best Grandpa in Law a girl could ask for, as you would always make sure my family was doing okay and that I wasn't working too long hours at work... just to name a couple.
All these memories will never be forgotten, as you will forever be missed. But, to me, there is no greater testament to the legacy you are leaving behind. From the hard work values to caring of loved ones and everything in between, I can see all that reflected in the actions of your sons (the best Father in Law (Chippy) and a wonderful Uncle in Law (Ricky)) and in your loving grandson, my Hubby, Ryan.
I hope as each day passes, God continues to comfort and heal all the lives of family and friends you have touched. I am thankful to carry you with me for always, and extra thankful you never wrote me off for never buying a Ford. :o)
Love you!

It is with great sadness that I send my heartfelt condolences to my lifelong best friends Dede, Chip & Rick Lanz and family’s. Barney was a great person and someone that I looked up to and kindled my interest in mechanics. I remember meeting him in the shop across the road from the homestead when Chip & I had become friends sometime in early high school. I can still to this day, see that Cat Bulldozer sitting apart with gears all laid out on cardboard, thinking Barney has got to be darn good to get that all back together, and then repainted to look and operate like new again! One of my favorite memories of Barney (and I have many) was the time Chip and I went to the bank in Vernon driving my 1961 Corvair on a very cold day in the winter. While I was in the bank with Chip trying to get warm a nice person came in asking if anyone owned the red Corvair outside. When I said I did, he responded you better get outside its on fire! The darn thing had some kind of electrical short and melted all the wiring in the rear engine compartment! Well now Chip & I were stranded at the bank and I was poorer than a church mouse at the time. Chip said “Don’t worry I will give Dad a call and see if he will tow you back to the shop and maybe we can fix it together” Sure enough, Barney came with his new beautiful Ford Red pickup and hooked a chain on the old Corvair. The Corvair was completely dead and had no heat and no way to keep the frost off the windshield. With both Chip and I breathing water vapor inside the interior windows became frosted over. Now for the good part of the story, it seems Barney was quite famous for driving fast when he got on the hilly road out of Vernon. He had that Ford just flying up that road, with the Corvair in tow! Needless to say I was so scared I was thankful I had used the restroom earlier! Of course Chip just thought it was the funniest thing, and said “I forgot to warn you Dad (Barney) likes to tow fast”! Barney helped me out of trouble other times too, as I ended up in the ditch a lot, trying to get up the big hill to have a great time with Chip! I fondly remember being a pest I am sure spending more time at the Lanz’s than at home and being welcomed and fed by Dede & Barney many times! I can remember one night working late with just Barney on Chip’s race car, Chip was working at night at Vernon Downs and it was needing repairs. It was a great experience for me and I think then I decided being a mechanic would be fun! I am so thankful I had the opportunity to have Barney in my life as well as the entire family. I regret deeply I can not be with you at this time of great loss. Maurice

Rick and Chip, I first met your dad in 1983 in the undercarriage shop of Syracuse Supply. I will always remember that day for two reasons. It was either my first, or near first face to face experience with a customer. Your dad was so kind and appreciative of my efforts. He made me feel wonderful about just doing my job.
Freddie Reed was my mentor at the time. Freddie so liked your Dad as well. Freddie passed on a few years ago. When hearing about your dad, I felt sadness for you, but I must share, I know Freddie is enjoying his rekindled friendship with Barney.
My most sincere thoughts!
