Obituary of Gary C. Dunne

Gary C. Dunne, 80; Vernon, NY died on September 21, 2019 at home. Gary was born in Oneida, NY on March 3, 1939, the son of Paul and Jeannette D. Dunne. He was a resident of the Verona area for most of his early life, moving to Vernon, NY in 1994. He was a 1957 graduate of VVS High School, and received his Baccalaureate degree from SUNY. He married Susanne Smith, Durhamville, NY on Nov. 25, 1961, a union that lasted for 57 wonderful years. They were blessed with three fantastic sons who became the focus and love of their lives. Gary joined the New York State Police in 1962, and during nearly 30 years of service he served in Troops B, C, D and F, in various Patrol and Command positions, including eventual tenures as Major/Troop Commander in Troops B, C and D. In 1979, he was assigned full time to the planning and logistics tasks relating to the Security of the Lake Placid XIII Winter Olympic Games (1980) and served as Assist. Director of all Olympic Security functions throughout the Olympic period. In 1985 Gary was assigned to Division Headquarters, Albany NY as a Staff Inspector, with duties relating to Agency Quality Control, Internal Affairs, and Human Resources. In 1987, he was promoted to the rank of Lieut. Colonel (Assistant Deputy Superintendent) where he served on the Division's Executive Committee which develops and implements plans and programs for the NYSP statewide. He retired from the Division in 1991 after accruing numerous career Commendations. Upon his retirement from the NYSP, Gary accepted the position of Corporate Director of Non-Nuclear Security for the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation where he initiated a number of highly successful asset recovery programs. He retired from this position in 2002. Surviving besides his wife, Susanne, are two sons and daughters-in-law. Robert P. and Diane Dunne, Verona, NY and Michael J. and Deanna Dunne, Sherrill, NY. Granddaughters Rachel (Shane) McManus, Oneida; Danielle (Felix) Evertz, Cologne, Germany; Jenna (Jesse) Whitmeyer, Verona; Cecilia Dunne, Sherrill and grandson Michael Dunne, Sherrill. Great-granddaughters Ellie and Luna Evertz and Abagail, Isabella and Anastasia Whitmeyer. Gary was predeceased by his son Gary Michael and brother Paul in 1986. Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Verona, NY. Calling hours will be Thursday 3-7 PM at Malecki Funeral Home, Vernon, NY. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church or Hospice & Palliative Care on Middle Settlement Rd, New Hartford.
