Obituary of Shirley M. Maxfield

Oneida Castle-Shirley M. Maxfield, age 89, formerly of Oneida Castle and Sherrill passed away peacefully early Thursday evening December 24, 2020 at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility. She was born in Vernon, New York, the eldest daughter of the late Gordon and Bessie (Craver) Sprague, and attended Westmoreland Central School. On February 5, 1949 Shirley and William O. Maxfield were united in marriage and shared that vow of fifty years together until William's death in 1999. Prior to her retirement in 1993, Shirley worked for the Dairylea Cooperative in Vernon. She was an Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed playing pitch, board games (particularly, Scrabble) and watching Mets baseball games. Shirley is survived by daughters Linda and son-in-law, Myles Etkin of Glens Falls, Diana Pomerleau of Oneida, and son Kenneth and daughter-in-law, Karin Maxfield of California, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Doris Sprague, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her Sprague siblings; Stanley, Donald, Gordon, Valerae, and sister-in-law Mabelle Sprague. The family would like to acknowledge Shirley and William's special friends of many years, Carolyn and the late George Peck. Due to COVID restrictions, a funeral service will be held in the spring at a time and date to be announced. Burial will be in the spring in Oneida Castle Cemetery, Oneida Castle, NY.
