Obituary of Peter L. Hewitt
Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Peter Leonard Hewitt, of Verona, NY, passed away on February 27, 2024, at age 85. He left this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity.
Pete was born in Oneida, NY, on August 28, 1938, to Leonard Agan Hewitt and Jennie Janes Hewitt. He was raised with his cousin, Edward (Eddie) Webb, in North Bay, but most of his youth was spent on Broad Street in Oneida with his parents and younger brother, Paul Agan Hewitt. He graduated (barely, he says) from Oneida High School in 1956, and joined the Navy, serving as a Photographer's Mate on the U.S.S. Essex.
It was through Eddie and his wife Marlene that Pete met the love of his life, Kathleen Vera Snell. They were married on September 7, 1963, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Munnsville, NY. Kathy predeceased him just shy of their 50 th anniversary.
Pete happily retired from Lockheed Martin in Utica in 1993 and then worked for Nice N Easy Grocery Shoppes for several years. He embraced an active lifestyle in retirement, traveling with Kathy to 46 states, preferring the slower roads whenever feasible.
He found joy in working in his garage, crafting useful items for family and friends. He delighted in fishing and boating on Oneida Lake, sharing meals and drinks with loved ones, camping, and playing golf.
Above all, Pete cherished his family, leaving behind his children, Pamela Jean Smith, Michael Peter (Michele) Hewitt, Patricia Joan (John) Pignetti, and Christine Lorraine Hewitt. He was predeceased by a daughter, Theresa Lynn Butler, in 2018. His eight grandchildren, whom he treasured, and four great-grandsons, whom he treasured even more, will greatly miss him. He also held a special place in his heart and soul for the many nieces, nephews, cousins, and myriad of friends.
We will celebrate Pete's life with conversation on Saturday, March 9, from 1-4 pm, at the Old Erie Golf Club in Durhamville. If you feel a desire to give, please consider the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org), one of Pete's favorite charitable organizations
