Obituary of Bruce E. Smith

Bruce E. Smith, age 91, of Munnsville passed away Saturday afternoon, April 13, 2024 in the Crouse Community Center after a very brief stay at the facility. He was born on December 17, 1932 in Sherrill, New York a son of the late Edwin and Lettie (Meade) Smith and was the class president and valedictorian of the 1949 graduating class of the Stockbridge Valley Central School. Bruce grew up working on the family farm. He later worked for the Munnsville Limestone Co., and Ryan Stone Company before landing a career with the Utica Mutual Insurance Company that took him and his family to Atlanta and Boston. After his retirement in 1992 as the vice president of Excess Surplus Lines for all of New England Bruce and his wife Dawn Miller whom he married on April 6, 1963 returned to Munnsville where they have resided ever since. While residing in Atlanta, Bruce was a chairman of the Boy Scouts Committee and was also active with the Boy Scouts in Massachusetts and Munnsville when he returned. He served on the zoning board in Stockbridge for a few years and found much joy in playing golf, riding his snowmobile, hunting and gardening. Surviving is his wife of sixty-one years, Dawn M. Smith, six children and their spouses, Mark R. (Allison) Smith of Munnsville, Michelle A. (Dennis) Sheridan of Petoskey, MI, Stanley E. (Jennifer) Smith of Morrisville, Bruce A. Smith and Helene Breyerton of Canastota, Theresa (Ari) Olkkola of Rome and Barton D. (Heidi) Smith of Pepperell, MA, 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, one sister Edith Wilson of Munnsville and many nieces and nephews. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, two brothers Stillman Smith and Ross R. Smith and two granddaughters, Kayla Smith and Megan Grover. Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc. 464 Sherrill Rd., Sherrill, NY. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow in Stockbridge Valley Cemetery, Stockbridge, NY.
