Obituary of Joseph F. Smith

Verona-Joseph F. Smith, age 94, of Country Drive passed away peacefully Saturday morning February 16, 2019 in St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. He was born on November 26, 1924 in Rome, New York a son of the late Gordon and Frances Smith and attended West Rome School. During WW II Joe served with the United States Army 11th Airborne Division in the Pacific Theater. On June 22, 1946 Joe and Sally Baldigo were united in marriage in Rome, New York and shared this loving union of sixty-seven years together until Sally's death on October 16, 2013. Prior to his retirement Joe was employed for many years in the quality department of Rome Cable Company and later went on to drive truck. He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Verona, Verona VFW, Durhamville Vets Club, William Russell American Legion Post 404 of Vernon and was a life member of the Rome Polish Home. Surviving are his daughter Ann Horodnick of Verona, son, Joseph D. Smith of Marysville, Ohio, eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Joe was predeceased by his wife, Sally B. Smith, son-in-law John Horodnick, six brothers; Robert, Edward, Myron, Frederick, Raymond and Ralph and one sister; Georgiana. Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday, February 23, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 (noon) at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 4897 Old Oneida Rd., Verona, NY, 13478. Funeral services will be at 12:00 (noon) immediately following calling hours at the church with Rev. Katie Yahns officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Verona Cemetery, E. Main St., Verona, NY. In memory of Joe donations may be sent to the American Heart Association, Shriners Children's Hospital and the Oneida Relay for Life, Oneida Branch.
